Recycling Awareness Week
Consumer campaign Waste Awareness Wales is calling on Welsh householders to mark Recycle Week (21 – 27 June) by making one small change to what they throw away.
Wales has seen a huge increase in recycling in the past decade, but the Welsh Assembly Government’s new waste strategy for Wales, to be published 21 June, is expected to call for even greater levels of recycling.
Waste Awareness Wales is reminding people that even small changes can make a big impact on Wales’ waste levels. The campaign is urging Welsh householders to adopt one of its Top Tips for Recycle Week:
- Don’t just recycle in the kitchen. Remember to separate your waste in every room in the house, including the bathroom.
- If you have a separate food waste collection, use it. If not visit www.wasteawarenesswales.org.uk to find out more about home composting.
- You can recycle all newspapers, so there’s no excuse to put them in the bin.
- Dispose of old electrical products responsibly. Talk to the shop where you bought the item to see if they have a take back policy, or visit www.wasteawarenesswales.org.uk to find out about facilities in your area.
- Get used to carrying a reusable bag. Charges for carrier bags will be introduced next spring, so adopt the habit of using a good old shopping bag.
Rachel Jowitt, Head of Waste Support at Waste Awareness Wales, said:
"Wales has done a brilliant job over the past few years in really getting behind recycling. It’s not that surprising though, because recycling is so easy to do and has huge benefits for the environment.
"Most of us are already recycling but we need to do that little more and Recycle Week is the perfect time to start. If we all make just one small change we can together make a massive difference, which is why I am calling on everyone in Wales to get involved."
What change are you going to make???
